Foam Proportioners Description

The foam proportioners are used for mixing water at low, medium, or high expansion foam concentrate to feed either portable nozzles or small stationary plants. For the later case, the total flow rate must equal the flow rating of the mixer at its outlet pressure.
They provide an inexpensive foam proportioning means for system requiring fixed flow rates and where available water supply pressures are adequate. The pressure drop across the foam proportioner will be approximately 30% of the supply line pressure, for this reason the typical operating pressure at the inlet of the foam proportioner should be between 5 – 8 bar (72.5.5 – 116 psi) depending on the model.
The flow rate and operating pressure are of primary importance in determining the required foam proportioner inlet pressure. The foam proportioner must have the same flow rate of the foam making discharge device.

Applications

The Sabo Española foam proportiones are typically used in mobile foam equipment but also in fixed foam system application where the total flow rate is fixed. They are used by the fire fighting department or expert operators for protecting flammable liquid storage tank, loading rack, dike areas, and anywhere flammable liquids are used.
Fixed foam proportioners are typically used in fixed system where simple and cost effective foam proportioning is required. Other than the flowing water, no external power supply is required to operate the foam proportioner.

Installation requeriments

The foam proportioner is very sensitive to downstream pressures and it is designed accordingly for use with specified hose and pipe length located between them and the foam maker.
For fixed system must be taken special attention to guarantee the fixed flow rate consumption otherwise the foam percentage result not accurate.
The pressure drop across the foam proportioner is approximately one third of the inlet pressure.
The foam proportioner must not be mounted more than 2,2 m (7,21 ft) above the minimum foam concentrate liquid level.
Downstream pipe, fittings, elevation heads, and discharge devices must not result in line proportioner outlet backpressure in excess of 70% of line proportioner inlet pressure.
The foam proportioner are supplied with a check valve for use in horizontal position with the foam suction connection in upper side, for different application a check valve must be installed in the foam concentrate line with the direction of flow from the foam concentrate storage tank to the line proportioner.
A shutoff valve in the foam concentrate line is recommended to enable flush out of foam solution piping or allow water only discharge.
Pipe to foam concentrate inlet must be sized to match the foam concentrate inlet piping size.
Sabo Española recommends that the foam concentrate inlet line remains as short and not complicated as possible.

Inspections, maintenance and tests

The owner is responsible for maintaining the fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. For minimum maintenance and inspection requirements, refer to recognized standards such as those produced by UNI, UNE, NFPA, LPC and VdS which describe care and maintenance considering that all the actions not well done can put the system out of service.
